Present biomedical research addresses two critical issues: First, progressive population ageing, which is associated with the development of metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D), and neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer disease (AD); Second the epidemic of the XXI century, i.e. obesity, a risk factor in the development of cardiovascular disease. We have crafted a multidisciplinary research team aimed to decipher the molecular and biochemical mechanisms underlying metabolic alterations in T2D and AD. This knowledge would boost the development of new pharmacological approaches to the treatment and cure of T2D and AD. In addition, we respond to the needs of therapeutic education of patients suffering T2D and AD.
